The previous (deleted) version of this entry was uploaded in error. It had been requested by a Wikipedia entry as a part of the compilation of entries on Presidents of the British Sociological Association. The supplied text was taken from an existing web page and was intended to be edited before uploading. This did not happen and so the uploaded page was identical to my existing home page entry. This new version has been prepared and is completely new text. It was sent to the administrator who requested it more than a year ago and, despite follow-ups, has not been uploaded. I have therefore prepared and uploaded the text myself.
A number of queries have been added to the top of this article, with a request for clarification.
1. As previously noted, I wrote this article at the request of a Wikipedia section administrator who wanted biographical entries on all former Presidents of the British Sociological association. It was therefore commissioned for the encyclopedia. This is the reason why it was written by someone 'with a close connection' with the subject. The query on this point is therefore not relevant.
2. There are no citable sources for the personal biographical information. As I have provided this myself the data are correct and not in need of documentation. The career details are, however, substantiated in the official source cited, as per guidelines.
3. There may be a need for in-line citation on substantive points. All sources are in the publications listedvand i felt it unnecessary to list them again as references. However, I am happy to attend to this and will add in some citations.
I am happy to respond on anything else if the relevant section administrator wishes to follow up on the discussion.
